Huawei will be allowed to build parts of Britain’s 5G network, Boris Johnson has ruled.
The Chinese company will be given access to “non-core” parts of the network but will be banned from “sensitive locations” such as military or nuclear sites.
The decision comes amid warnings from the United States and Tory MPs that giving Huawei access to 5G could jeopardise transatlantic intelligence sharing.
On Tuesday the National Security Council, which comprises the Prime Minister, senior Cabinet ministers and representatives of the security services, decided to proceed with the Huawei deal even though it is a "high risk vendor" because its risks can be "safely managed".
