FOX News: Dem senator introduces DC statehood bill -- but effort faces uphill battle 

'Washington, Douglass Commonwealth' would be the 51st state under the plan 

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., introduced legislation Wednesday to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state and grant the district's more than 700,000 residents full representation in Congress. 

Carper has introduced the D.C. statehood bill in each Congress since 2013 to no avail, but this year, proponents are more optimistic with Democrats now in control of the House, Senate and the White House. 

"There’s never been a time when statehood for the District was more likely," said D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who introduced companion legislation in the House and thanked Carper for his "unending efforts" for D.C statehood.

WNU Editor: It is not going to happen. You need 60 votes in the US Senate and I doubt that any Republican will support this legislation. Ditto for those who also want to make Puerto Rico a U.S. state. The Democrats had their chance in the first two years of President Obama's term when they had a super majority in the US Senate and were the majority in the House of Representatives. I am sure this is one of those things where the Democrats have regrets on not pushing for this agenda when they had the chance to succeed.
