I am not privy to what is happening in Zelensky's inner circle, but I suspect that there are factions who have different views on what to do as the war grinds on. On one side there are those who probably want to negotiate a surrender to spare Ukraine from even more devastation, and on the other side there are those who are determined to fight regardless of the cost. In the case of Denis Kireev it appears that he wanted to end the war, but due to his ties to former President Yanukovych and alleged contacts in Russia he was deemed a traitor, and the rest is history.
